Announcements
Welcome to BSA Troop 233 in 2023-2024. To help us prepare for an exciting and successful year for all of the Scouts, it’s important to set some guidelines for participation and to set expectations.
What We Expect From Scouts and Parents
Participation: Scouting is a team activity. If members of a Patrol do not participate regularly, it can make it very difficult for the team to complete their program. Scouts normally will not progress without some parent participation. Some of the work necessary for advancement must be done individually. We will do as much as we can as Patrols, but at-home support and reinforcement is invaluable.
Be Prepared: It is the individual Scout’s responsibility to keep track of their progress for rank advancement and to get their requirements signed off. It is important the Scouts show up with their handbooks, in proper uniform, ready to participate.
Be Helpful: We are all volunteers. Sign up to help at an outing, at boards-of-review, or to be a merit badge counselor. The strength of our program is due to the participation of the parents. Be part of our proud tradition by helping prepare our Scouts to be outstanding adults. Sign Up HERE: https://myminiurl.net/0kYKw
Be a Trained Member: Register as an adult at My.Scouting.org. Stay up to date with the online BSA Youth Protection Training and the online Catholic Diocese CASE Training. This Troop requires that at least one adult member of each family has completed this training. Links to these trainings can be found at http://bsa233.weebly.com.
Communication: Communication is key. If your scout needs to miss a meeting, please let your Patrol Leader know. If you experience any issues, let’s communicate early and clearly.
What you can expect from the Troop Adult Leadership Team
Leadership: The Scouts plan and operate this Troop. Adult leaders are here to coach the Scout leaders and to ensure a safe and growth-focused environment. Having said that, Scout leaders will make mistakes and will be allowed to make them in a safe environment.
Communication: Adult leaders will be tasked with communication of schedules, activities, and needs. We will be using Scoutbook.com and SignUpGenius.com to accomplish this. If any person needs special accommodations, please let us know.
Programming: While the Scouts are doing the plans and operations of the activities, the Adult leaders will ensure that the programming for each year allows for all participating Scouts to accomplish the learning and leadership goals required for regular rank advancement.
Behavioral Issues: Bullying or any other similar kind of disruptive behavior will not be tolerated at any time. The first infraction during a meeting or outing, the Scout removed from the activity and will assist the Scoutmaster or Assistant Scoutmaster. Second infraction will result in a phone call to the parent and the Scout will be sent home.
Troop and Patrol Logistics
Communications: This Troop now uses Scoutbook to communicate our calendar and to send emails. If you are not already, please sign up for this online service at Scoutbook.com. You will have access to see your Scout’s Progress as well as notes on each Patrol’s activity. It is vital that participants RSVP on Scoutbook for outdoor activities and service projects. If you do not RSVP, you will be turned away.
Time and Place: Patrol Meeting are Mondays from 7:00 pm until 8:30 pm. In general, if school is not in session, our Patrols are not meeting. Many nights we are done by 8:00 pm. Parents are welcome to stay and observe quietly. The meeting schedule is listed for the year on Scoutbook.
Dues: Over the last few years, the local council and insurance registration costs have steadily risen but our yearly dues have not kept up. This year we have increased dues to $125 per Scout, with a $10 discount for each additional Scout in a family.
Fundraising: Troop 233 currently has only one (1) official fundraising channel, our Friday evening Lenten Fish Dinners. This fundraiser is generally four (4) days of effort during the weeks of Lent. Our Scouts and families prepare the eat-in/to-go meals in the kitchen of St. Kateri School between 4p-8p. Funds raised offset many program and activity costs throughout the year.
